PBS news hour is on now. What is being seen here, though? Problem after problem, I'd say. Looks like we could be in major trouble as a world in a matter of days. I hope not, but this is just what I'm seeing. Anyone else may not see it, but I am one of those guys who was not all that good at doing what I was tasked to do at Georgia Tech. What I did well in, though, was ROTC. Imagine that. And, when I flunked out of school I found my main opportunity for employment was the military.
Interestingly enough, when I discussed the problem with our local Army Recruiter, he looked at my draft card and told me he couldn't even discuss recruitment with me since I had a deferment to allow for my studies at Ga. Tech. Of course those studies were a moot point since I had been laid off (or so I say) from my studenthood thanks to my marvelous performance with my studies. Marvelous! Flunked out marvelous. No problem, though, since the Airforce and Navy recruiters did not have the same outlook as the Army recruiter had. Poor training? Who knows. USAF it was to be.
Turns out that was a blessing in disguise. The Air Force was just what I needed. I obtained training in electronics maintenance and had the opportunity to see the world on the government's ticket. South Texas was for basic training. Following basic training, I was sent to Biloxi, Mississippi (Keesler AFB) for technical training on microwave radios. Then on to Turkey (Istanbul, at that) for my first duty station and VietNam for my second.
And there could have been a problem for real if those mortar rounds that the VC threw at us at Tahn Son Nhut, the USAF part of the Saigon Airport, had been just a few yards off their actual track, but they weren't. Life was good. 26 guys couldn't say that, though, not after the attack we had during Tet of '68. Oh, well--want more than this, you'll just have to buy my book. It's on sale at Amazon.
That's all for today. Thanks for taking the time for Blogger!
Just wondering if posts work here. Will see.
