PGA, anyone?

Watching today's PGA championship on TV, I'm struck by the number of players carrying their umbrellas and resembling, to a certain extent human mobile mushrooms.  Hah!  

Quite a game, this golf!  Or so many think.  Aiken is a golfing community, that's for sure, with the Augusta National just down the road.  Tried it once, in New Albany.  

I wasn't exactly a great golfer, there, that's for sure.  Pretty good at putt-putt, though.  C'est ca!

And today, May 28, 2023, watching a PGA program on one of my local free channels, I am recalling one time when a friend took me to Augusta National for a just before official play began view of what was done and who was doing it.  Certainly do not remember the who's, but the game hasn't changed one iota.  Just like I wrote about somewhere, when I was playing in New Albany at my Uncle's farm.  Some still putting their drives exactly where they needed to be.  Others, like me, putting them a bit off course and having to correct for their initial mistakes, and finding that time to do?  While everyone else was progressing around the course?  Ah, golf!  Great game, right?

What is being done should be pretty obvious.  All, ALL nations of the world should do whatever they can to help Ukraine, short of sending a nuclear weapon to Russia's capitol.  That would be a good thing if Putin, and only Putin, could be taken out, though.  The thousands of ordinary Russians that would also be taken out are the reason I would not want to see this happen.

If one Russian who has the opportunity to take Putin out does this, though, he or she would be a martyr who would be loved by nearly all the world.  Wish it would happen--sooner rather than later.  DESTROY PUTIN AND HIS ACCOMPLICES!  DESTROY, DESTROY, DESTROY ! 

We saved Russia from one dictator in the 1940's.  Now Russia has its own dictator, it's own Hitler.  Someone needs to eliminate him, and THE SOONER, THE BETTER!

Representation in Washington (and in SC?)

 I went to a web site titled "SC.Gov" and took information, email addresses, to contact my representation in Washington.  Big mistake, apparently.  When I used the email addresses for Graham, Scott, and Wilson, I got returns from the system saying saying my message could not be delivered.  Great, I'm thinking.  Having received nothing back from Wilson, though, I decided to send him my thanks,  On trying to send my message, a form with the same questions I got from the two senators was received.  Apparently, even though I had email addresses for all three of these "representatives," none of the email addresses given on the site worked quite right.  Not a good thing in my book--looks like either none of my reps want me to be able to simply send them an email, or they all want to have me fill out a rather extensive form to make contact.  Not something I like at all.

Try it--you probably won't like it either.  SC.Gov:  "The official web site of the State of South Carolina" according to the info at its bottom of the page.  Not exactly useless, but not exactly what I would want out of my SC government site.  

Guess I should complain.  How and to whom are the questions I need to answer first.

War? Why!

 If there ever was any question in my mind, that deployment to VietNam in 1968  removed it.  Is war a good thing?  Definitely NOT!  

TET of ‘68 was definitely not a good thing for anyone over there.  Not for the VietCong, not for the Vietnamese patriots, and definitely not for those of us who were there to do our governments bidding.  My memories bring me back, often in the middle of the night to what I saw that night, to what let me know enough about war to last my lifetime.  You see, TET was a national holiday for all Vietnamese, South, North, Whatever–it was (and is) a major holiday for them.  For us, though? No, a definite no, would be my answer.  

What I saw was tracers running up and down my Airforce base’s streets…tracers that were generally loaded one to maybe six or so rounds in an M-16’s clip, that were used to show the rifleman where his bullets were actually going.  And what I saw lighting up the night, that night of TET, was terrifying, to say the least.  

Yes, we had our holiday display, and, while I know not how many of the enemy were taken out, I do know the number of our defenders who did not live to see the light of day was twenty-six.  Not a good night for us, by any measure other than the fact that we only lost twenty-six.

“War, uh, Good God! What good is it?  Absolutely Nothing!” is the first line of a song that defines what was happening that night in VietNam, and I can only tell you the people over there would agree totally with the statement.  As would the people in Ukraine today.  

What can we do today?  I don’t know, but whatever we can do to end this craziness, I hope our politicians DO do!  And that’s it.  And, to borrow a line from our AikenStandard paper’s Executive Editor, “Thanks for reading!”

Aiken Regal Theatre, American Red Cross, GREAT!

 Just received a mailing from "The Blood Connection"  in Aiken for "Dinner and a Movie!"  GRRREAT!  I usually give blood about once each year.  My yearly time has come around, and I see our local theatre has opted to help out with donations!  WELL, no problem, for sure.  Will drop by the very next ARC blood drive and give!  Would give without the promotion, of course, but, in this case, I say FINE!!!  Thanks Regal Theatre, and thanks American Red Cross for your continued good service to our community!  PostScript: SORRY FOLKS, MADE A MISTAKE HERE.  PLEASE SEE COMMENTS.  SVG  Would have just deleted but I think there is an issue or two here that should be thought about by everyone. Whoopi, for You

Watching today's "The View," I'm remembering the first time I saw Whoopi Goldberg on screen.  It was when I was in school, at Ga. Tech, and when my date and I decided to go to one of the closest movie theaters to my school.  It was a well advertized movie, and it was the first time, I think, anyone might have seen Whoopi,  And, what was said is the only thing I remember about that movie:  One of the "stars" was leaning over little girl Whoopi and the line she said was, "Girl, you is uggggly...!!!"  

The movie was titled "The Color Purple."  And that line is the only thing I remember from it.  That and the fact that the line waiting to get into the Fox Theatre was quite long, the weather was quite cool, and the only thing about the other people in the line was their complections, which (other than, perhaps, those of maybe two other couples) were definitely not like mine!

Quite a movie!  And Whoopie is still with us!  Just as ugly as she was then (which was no more a truth then than it is now!  Whoopie was, and still is, Great!)

Just "Walkin'"

Well, I started out to make a post and then decided to add onto it, and this GD program deleded everything.  Shi--y program!

Let me try again!

My initial post, which this damn program deleted, spoke of the song "Just walkin' in the rain" and elucidated just a bit,  I guess what I need to do is prepare my entry separately, then add it here. And instead of adding anythng later, I will rewirte, then repost.  Damn program!

Oh, well, here goes again:

"Just walkin' in the rain, Gettin' soakin' wet, Hopin' things would change, Just-a tryin' to forget" is the first line of an old song, a very good old song, that I remember from way back, say in the fifties of our last century in my book, or so I think, and it's well worth anyone taking a look.  Pretty sure it can be found with a google search.  No matter, though, the reason for even bringing it up is I tried, unsuccessfully, to get my dog Stela to go out back this morning to do what we all usually need to do on first getting up.  Well that is, of course, what most of us need to do.  But would she do what I was suggesting to do?  NO!  Oh well, after about a half hour of suggesting to her that she would be more comfortable after going out back, and noticing that the rain had let up considerably, I put on my jacket and got the leash.  This was something she obviously wanted me to do.

Soon we were doing our thing on our city streets adjacent to our house.  And, the needed squat was made, and shortly tereafter, a well needed daily discharge was also made.  As I collected that very fertile item from a neighbor's yard, I thought about what the problem might have been.  Maybe my trusty accomplice was thinking a bit beyond my thoughts.  Maybe she was thinking, "What if I were to want to chase a squirrel in our back yard and on so doing were to step into "THAT?"

Well, dear dog, perhaps if that was what your thinking was, perhaps waiting till we were taking our walk was a very good idea!

 

Sweet Violets

Today, around noonish, I took my trusty doggie on one of our usual walks around the neighborhood. She is one to look around as we walk and while approaching Azalea Place, she walked in a ditch at the side of the road and as I watched I saw a beautiful little flower! Which brought on an old tune which I hadn't even thought about--much less sung--in a long, long time--but today? That's just what I did! See if you remember the tune: The words of the song are below! Love it! . . There once was a farmer who took a young miss, In back of his barn where he gave her a lecture On chickens and horses and eggs, And told her that she had such beautiful manners That suited a girl of her charms, A girl he could take in his washing and ironing And then if she did, they could get married and raise lots of: . . Washington Week

Watching "Washington Week" this morning, I'm seeing a long conversation about "Trumpism." Well, I guess there are still quite a few people out there who think he was a pretty good president. And, there are still quite a few who think he wasn't--which is where I stand. While there are quite a few things that he did that I would agree with, there are quite a few things about him and what he did or didn't do, as well as quite a few things about what and who he is that I find unpresidential, to say the least. Why people "like" him is not something I need to consider. He is not very likable as a person or as a leader, not to me anyway. I think the best thing for him (and for America) would be for him to return to Maralago and do his thing there, whatever that might be. The truth is, anything he might do or say today has no relevance to me anymore than anything any street bum (well, any rich street bum, anyway) might say or do. He needs to go away and stay away. Period.

Blog? Who, ME? well....

 I have a friend, well, I guess a "relative in law" might be an appropriate moniker for my friend, Linda, and she writes letters all the time that are, in my opinion on the order of many of these "Web Logs" that you can find and read anytime you want.  

So, if you know me you will understand why I suggested she take up blogging, but "she don't think so!"  The following is just a small example of why I made my suggestion.  Read it and think about it, and maybe, just maybe it may apply to you, too:

    Steve – thanks for the kind words and I don’t think I would be a good blogger!  I’m sure you can come up with another “work of art!”  Read some of your blog and can totally relate – not from having Alzheimer’s but from being around those who do!  Praying that you are on medication to help slow down the progression.  Hazel was on a couple which did help her and my “pea brain” does not remember the names; but it’s been 13 years since she moved to her eternal home!  So, I’m very sure that there are newer/better options now.  Lots of prayers for all of you …

 

Ric left early this morning for Ocean Isle to watch 2 of the grandsons play travel baseball; and I’ve managed to finish reading a book; clean-up the kitchen and do some laundry!  None of the “stuff” I had been thinking of doing yesterday, day!  BUT, I did find a set of keys which had been MIA for a couple of days now, to that’s a positive too!  He did go out to play 9-holes with a friend of his the other day in the afternoon  -- he has not played 18 for a very long time.  His right foot has healed up very nicely after the big toe and a good portion of the bone had to be removed because it was infected – and I think that because of him having dealt with neuropathy for YEARS he was not as “challenged” as others with balance.

 

Staying home for Church is not always a bad thing … and it is definitely better than doing nothing!  Pine Valley UMC’s website is @ https://pvumc.net/watch and the Pastors there are all very nice.  I also have started listening to Pastor Barry’s Prayer Time on Fridays …

 

Now, I’ve got to go get at least one thing on the VERY long list behind me!  Just trying to figure out “which thing” will be time-consuming too -- hahaha

And a great big "thank you" to you, Linda!  Sometime you simply "make my day!"

Alzheimers reigns--but...

Sometime my thinking takes me to a place where I would like to go, but haven't.  In any case, that's my thinking today about an email I sent to one of my children.  No real problems here, just an idea I had that I think is worth a post, if you know what I mean.  So, here 'tis!  Guess I could begin with a "Dear Family?"  

"Your mother mentioned the conversation you two had this evening and she is more than just a little interested in following up on this, maybe to make a killing here that would bring in a bit of the big bucks we all would like to see come to our families.  

    "I, too, would like to see something come from your conversation, which was something more than just a little worthwhile.  My problem is my condition does not allow for remembering much of what she told me about your conversation.  At present, though, I am able to do a bit of analytical thinking and am also able to make suggestions and write ups, proposals, e.g., that we might be able to use. I will need to be told exactly what is wanted from me, though.

    "You will have to lead the effort if there is to be an effort.  I am not able.  Neither is your mother, or so I think, but I could be wrong here.  I hope I am wrong, but sometime I wonder if it is just me or if both of us have problems with our thinking equipment.  I don't know, you will have to decide.  Investigate all you can, discuss more with your mother and me, and your siblings, and let me know what you think."

That's it.   So far, no response, or so I think.  Could be I did get a response but it was over the phone and, again, that memory of mine is just not all that good.  Sorry, dear reader.  Any thoughts?  I would appreciate any help anyone might be able to provide.  Alzheimers reigns, I'm afraid.  Wish it were not the case but, but I guess I'll have to live with what I have and you can read what I continue to generate or not, it's all up to you (if you have the time and patience, perhaps, to put up with what I am able to generate.)  We'll see, is all I can say.  

How about that.  Wonder if I might be able to use my diagnosis to the benefit of all of us?  Could be something you might consider--Alzheimers is something, after all, that should be a concern to all who just might be getting a bit older these days.  Think about it....

Thoughts while Walking Stela

 While walking with Stela this morning, I began thinking about what I might write as a post.  The reason for this is invariably while we walk I come up with one thing or another that I would like to pass on to whomever.  Only problem is, when this happens I don't have any way of doing so.  

So...what do you think my solution to my problem might be?  Well, unless you are really omniscient (and if that's not a word, guess I need a better way to write my thoughts), a way that suggests corrections--something I'll look for.  

In any case, that solution is a little thing sitting on my dresser that I've been ignoring way too long.  Would you believe a small voice recorder?  Well, that's it.  All I need to do is turn it on, place it in my pocket, and begin my walk.  Pretty simple, right?

Right.  

Now to give it a try.  If only I can remember how to use the dang thing!

Alzheimer's on your plate?

 As someone who has been given the diagnosis of Alzheimer's, I am, of course, more than just a little interested in items that may point at a way out of this mentally crippling disease.  One item follows (Where the article, and more, of course, may be found is at the address at the top.)  Anyone having any concern about this disease should find it just a bit interesting.

This gene should have almost guaranteed her fate... but she defied the odds. As Being Patient reports, Aliria Rosa Piedrahita de Villegas, despite carrying PSEN2, lived into her 70’s, when she died of cancer, leaving scientists with a very important mystery to solve: PSEN2 is an early onset marker linked to a high likelihood of Alzheimer’s at a very young age, 40’s and 50’s. Scientists were astounded that she didn’t get Alzheimer’s. An autopsy even confirmed she did indeed have the presence of beta-amyloid plaque in her brain. But they did find something else: a genetic mutation that could have counteracted the risk of PSEN2.  As the daughter of a geneticist, I find this particular aspect of research fascinating. There are several biotech firms looking for ways to re-engineer our genes in order to make risky genes act more like those that offer us additional protection. As genetic testing becomes more common and accessible, this field of research is getting more attention. Few things are certain when it comes to Alzheimer’s. but genetic research could unlock a new world of answers.
